s. More research is needed to prove the health benefits of moringa for humans. Heart health
in animal studies, moringa extract has improved heart health.
In one study, moringa lowered cholesterol and reduced the formation of plaque in arteries. It acted in a manner similar to a statin drug. Diabetes control
moringa tea could help people with diabetes regulate their blood glucose levels. Many studies have shown positive results with animals. Human studies have been less consistent. Some show that moringa consumption can lower glucose levels after meals. Researchers say that differences between moringa varieties and preparation methods could cause differing results.
Does moringa have side effects?
Among different plant-derived secondary metabolites, alkaloids are extensively distrusted containing basic nitrogen atoms.
N,α-l-rhamnopyranosylvincosamide, phenylacetonitrilepyrrolemarumine, 40-hydroxyphenylethanamide-α-l-rhamnopyranoside and its glucopyranosyl derivative are the major alkaloids present in moringa oleifera leaves [ 14 , 51 ]. These alkaloids and their derivatives are extensively used for the treatment of various medical disorders. Glucosinolates are another type of secondary metabolites found in leaves and seeds, in which 4-o-(a-l-rhamnopyranosyloxy)-benzylglucosinolate (glucomoringin) is the major one [ 8 ]. A natural plant enzyme, myrosinase, generates isothiocyanates, nitriles and thiocarbamates renowned for their powerful hypotensive and spasmolytic
effects
through enzymatic catabolism [ 9 ].
In clinical trials, 90% of respondents experienced no side effects when moringa oleifera has given along with hiv drugs [ 34 ]. In a pilot clinical study, moringa oleifera leaf powder reduced post-prandial glycemia in diabetic patients [ 35 ]. Phenolics and other antioxidant substances in the blood reduce blood glucose levels. Several studies showed that moringa leaves could cure both types of diabetes. The inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators and increased antioxidant level confirmed moringa leaves are a potent antidiabetic agent [ 36 ]. Moringa oleifera leaf extract suspension at 50 mg/5 ml exhibit a significant decrease in serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamate pyruvate transaminase confirming hepatoprotective activity in oral drug formulation [ 37 ].

). In another study, 10 healthy adults and 17 adults with type 2 diabetes were given 20 grams of the leaf powder with a meal. Researchers found that the supplement reduced the post-meal blood sugar increase in those with diabetes but not in those without the condition ( ). Researchers reported this dosage resulted in poor taste, which may have affected the consistency of intake. While these results are promising, additional long-term, high quality studies involving more people are needed before any firm conclusions can be made on the efficacy of moringa for managing type 2 diabetes. Summary moringa leaf powder may lower the post-meal increase in blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
Moringa is the sole genus in the plant family moringaceae. It contains 13 species, which occur in tropical and subtropical regions of africa and asia and that range in size from tiny herbs to massive trees. Moringa species grow quickly in many types of environments.
